About us
Giving Nation is a Citizenship Foundation project that supports secondary schools undertaking work to support charity and community. It is one of many similar popular and effective secondary school resources on offer from the Foundation.
Giving Nation materials are designed with a commitment to minimising effort by teachers whilst keeping a high impact on the lives of students. We provide ready-to-use resources and templates for both teachers and pupils, designed to facilitate activity and leave time for reflection and learning. We understand voluntary action to be a key component of active citizenship. It can be done most effectively and to greatest satisfaction when students understand the socio-political context of their voluntary action. We see charities as voluntary social coalitions; examples of citizen action. They are most effective when they use the breadth of their supporters' capacity to affect social change. When young people learn their capacity to affect change and enjoin it to that of others through voluntary giving they become empowered to not only participate in but to lead processes of social change. This is great citizenship!
This programme has been funded by the Office of the Third Sector in the Cabinet Office. Grants to support the Challenge are currently only available to schools in England. We will approach the other nations to see if they want to fund the programme (thay may even approach us!). It is possible to enrol in the programme without applying for the grant. All you need is a sum of money to help your students get going and then log your school on.
We also plan to enlist the support of philanthropic agencies around the country to help replenish funds of schools who expend their grant, so in the future we might be advising you where to go for extra funds.
Giving Nation has been carrying out a unique piece of research into students' knowledge, attitudes and behaviours in regard to charities and giving, and also into teachers' views of Giving Nation. You can download a report on 4 years of our research in the downloads section of the teachers' site.
We have also created an exciting website for young people. A place where they can play games that illustrate the power of cooperation, can find inspiration, chat to others and have their questions answered. The website also leads them on to action if that's what they're ready for, with links to hundreds of places to participate in communities and for national organisations.
We also hope that this website becomes your first port of call for tricks and tools to make your own school programme come alive, in class or extra-curricular.
