Battle of the bands

Battle of the bands

And the winner is...BANDS FOR RANDS!

G-Nation are very proud to present the winners of our Write and Win competition. The fantastic team of four have done loads to make a difference in Mozambique and they‘re fantastic journalists too. Here‘s their report on how they‘re making a change.

Bands For Rands
Since November 2004 we have been raising money to provide a farm and improve irrigation for a community in Mozambique. We have done this in many ways, from cake sales to sponsored stay-awakes. Our latest venture has been organising a charity concert featuring local music acts.220 people attended and we managed to raise £2324.

After attending a Fairtrade Fashion Show we were disgusted by the unfair distribution of wealth in the World and how poor millions are. We emphasised this when we went on the G8 march. We felt compelled to help but we see no point in waiting around until we get older-we want to act now.

We get great satisfaction when counting all that we‘ve raised or seeing people attend a concert we have organised. It is,however, difficult to gain respect from some adults as we are still relatively young.
Communication has been challenging, as has been keeping up with school work and sacrificing sleep!

The main people that will benefit from the money we raise are the community in Mozambique. Having the means to grow crops and sell livestock will revolutionise their lives. We plan to stay in Mozambique ourselves and employ local workers to build the farm buildings so other locals will also benefit.

Organising the concert has particularly changed us.We have had to become much more organised as we had to arrange so many different things, e.g advertising, sound, bands and a venue. Dealing with people so closely has made us more confident and consequently we even got up on the stage at the concert!

Bands for Rands are Alix and Katie (16) , Brogan and Bradley (15) from King Henry VIII and Coundon Court schools in Coventry and we think they are great.

Bands for Rands are the G-Nation Write and Win winners of the X-factor mobile phone. Are you a budding journalist? Get your work on what you want to change published on G-Nation. Email
